For the complete Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS review, go to www.infosyncworld.com Touchscreen technology is old news in the digital camera industry, thanks to Sony, but Canon didn’t release their first touchscreen digital camera until last year. The SD3500 IS put Canon on the map, particularly geared for point-and-shooters who wanted a great Auto camera that was easy to use. The Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS is the SD3500′s sequel, and it’s packed with many of the same upgrades found on its siblings, the PowerShot Elph 300 HS and SX230 HS. Canon’s prey within the point-and-shoot forest has been low light, and the PowerShot Elph 500 spends most of its mod money on making sure shots remain exposed and focused when the lights go down. The Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS also receives a few other choice upgrades like 1080p and new Image Effects, so let’s break them all down in our full review.
There were debates regarding strange lines at the bottom of videos when using the zoom with their Canon PowerShotSD 4500 IS. It’s true… When using the zoom in Full HD 1080 there are strange lines at the bottom of the video. However, if you use the regular HD 720 there are no lines.
First up you will see some of the videos I’ve shot with the PowerShot G12. These were mainly shot around Brighton beach in the early morning autumn sun. Making some great shadows and big contrast between sooting towards the sun and away. You’ll see how the image changes with different lighting conditions in the panning shots. There are also some static shots. All the footage has had SmoothCam applied as it makes it more watchable. There is no colour correction applied or any other effects. There is also a night shot of London. After (about 6 mins in) there is a selection of photos I took around London and Brighton over the last few days. It’s a nice camera and I hope it last me as well as the old PowerShot G2 it’s replacing. Still images to download available here. picasaweb.google.com

Demo of zoom capability of Canon Powershot SX30 IS. This was taken from my back yard. I did a full zoom from 24mm to the max optical zoom (840mm) which is 35x and then the digital zoom on top of that to reach 140x. Note that this is just a “cheap” point-and-shoot camera! EDIT: Added 3/2/2011 – According to Google Earth, the distance between me and the jogger is 2600 feet, which is about half a mile.
